From the world’s largest surf competition to the biggest corgi celebration, here is our pick of some of the top Huntington Beach Events in 2018.


Surf City Splash (1 January)
Visitors and locals alike can celebrate the New Year with a mass dip in the Pacific Ocean. A pancake breakfast to fuel extra courage precedes the big splash, with a costume competition at 11am. All Surf City Splashers will receive a certificate of appreciation to show they braved the sea on New Years’ Day.


Surf City USA Marathon (4 February)
An oceanfront course spanning Pacific Coast Highway to Central Park, the Surf City USA Marathon is considered one of the most scenic in the USA as well as one of California’s largest. The course offers runners classic Californian oceanfront views married with live surf band music throughout and a surfboard medal for finishers. A three-day beachside expo from 2 – 4 February allows visitors to embrace the California lifestyle further still, with the largest health and wellness event on the West Coast. Exhibitors will feature the latest in run technology, nutrition and fitness with events for the whole family.

Beachcruiser Meet (24 – 25 March)
Huntington Beach’s classic car show with a surf twist, the Beachcruiser Meet showcases cool classic motors, including the Woody – the official car of Surf City USA – station wagons, sedan deliveries, VW campers and pick-ups. Displayed against an ocean backdrop, visitors can pose for photos with car models synonymous with California’s surf culture. The perfect insta opp!


So Cal Corgi Beach Day (7 April)
Changing the perception of the corgi as part of the British royal family, Surf City’s So Cal Corgi Beach Day started in 2012 with just 15 corgis; the event has now expanded to over 800 and is currently the largest corgi celebration in the world. Sponsored by So Cal Corgi Nation – a group of corgi enthusiasts – the day is led by official host, Mr. Pickles the corgi. The ‘paw-some’ day includes corgi meet-and-greets, doggie limbo contests, photo opportunities, corgi costumes and talent contests. The event truly cements the breed as a California favorite and is a must for any visiting dog lover.

Taste of Huntington Beach (29 April)
Offering visitors tastes from 50 local restaurants and unlimited sampling of the region’s wineries and breweries, the annual Taste of Huntington Beach blends food, live entertainment and dancing. Taking place at a central location in Huntington Beach, foodies can visit individual stalls for each restaurant, winery and brewery in succession at this great gastronomic celebration.


AVP Beach Volleyball (May – exact dates TBC)
One of eight locations to host the annual AVP Beach Volleyball across the USA, Huntington Beach will welcome volleyball professionals from across the country. Visitors can watch the premier US pro beach volleyball tournament unfold by Huntington Pier with free general admission or purchase VIP tickets in advance. Since 2000, Huntington Beach has hosted more AVP events than any other location.


Chili at the Beach (16 June)
The annual chili cook-off features chili and salsa tastings from around 25 stalls which stretch along Huntington Beach’s Main Street. Visitors receive ballot cards to judge their top two favourite chilis and salsas, can sample local craft beers and enjoy live music in this family-friendly event.

Vans US Open of Surfing (23 – 31 July)
The World’s largest surf competition and lifestyle festival, the Vans US Open is a 9-day celebration of all things surf at Huntington City Beach. Over 300 athletes will compete on the waves at this World Surf League qualifier and over 500,000 visitors are expected to travel to Surf City USA® to enjoy the festival and see the world’s surfing legends in action.

Besides the headline surfing event, visitors can enjoy world-class skateboarding and BMX competitions, movie premieres and art exhibitions, demos and samples from action sport brands, as well as products from event sponsor, Vans.

The first US Open of Surfing took place in 1959 and past competitors have included surfing greats Andy Irons, Carissa Moore, Courtney Conlogue, Filipe Toledo, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Stephanie Gilmore.

Surf City Surf Dog Competition (29 September)
The 10th annual Surf City Surf Dog competition brings together surFURS, the community, dog lovers and families for a weekend of fun as these pups hit the waves of Surf City USA. The world famous event – with international competitors – is the premier date on the dog surfing circuit. Held at Huntington Dog Beach, the multi-heat competition takes place alongside a stand up paddleboard (SUP) with your pup event, a canine play zone and plenty of food trucks. Hot Dog, anyone?!


Breitling Huntington Beach Air Show (21 – 22 October)
As the only beachfront airshow on the West Coast of the USA, Breitling Huntington Beach Air Show launched in 2016 to provide visitors with a spectacular weekend of stunts and aerobatic displays above Huntington City Beach. The show has previously been headlined by the USAF Thunderbirds, joined by the US Navy Blue Angels and the RCAF Snowbirds, with the 2018 line-up to be confirmed.


Turkey Trot (22 November)
Visitors can join Thanksgiving celebrations with a difference by running (or walking) the Turkey Trot, which takes place in Huntington Beach every Thanksgiving morning. The annual event offers pre-Thanksgiving dinner exercise as ‘Turkey Trotters’ pass under the iconic Huntington Beach Pier, past the International Surfing Museum and on to Huntington Beach’s Main Street with 1k, 5k and 10k courses.


Cruise of Lights (December – various dates)
The Huntington Harbor Philharmonic Cruise of Lights® offers visitors festive 45-minute narrated boat tours through Huntington Beach’s waterways amid thousands of lights and animated displays across homes, docks and boats. The Cruise of Lights began in 1962 and has become a holiday tradition for visitors and locals alike.
