Monterey Hotel
Steinbeck Package

Monterey Hotel in Monterey, California

Press Release Issued January 2010 by www.mooncatcher.com

STEINBECK ENTHUSIASTS ENJOY LITERARY LODGING PACKAGE AT THE MONTEREY HOTEL

Tickets to National Steinbeck Center and a Copy of Steinbeck’s Cannery Row Included in Rate

Monterey, CA — In honor of Author John Steinbeck’s birthday on February 27, 2010, The Monterey Hotel has launched a “Steinbeck Package” offering guests accommodations, tickets to the National Steinbeck Center, a continental breakfast and a copy of the novel, Cannery Row. Available now through August 2010, the Monterey Hotel Steinbeck Package rates range from $99 to $189, depending on room type. The package is valid Sunday through Thursday (weekends for an additional $30 fee).

“Our hotel is located just a heartbeat away from many places described in Steinbeck’s novels,” said Maureen Doran, Monterey regional manager for Moonstone Hotel Properties. “His lore is truly a part of our local culture, and the themed package is an ideal fit for our property.”

Indeed, located on historic Alvarado Street in an elegant structure built in 1904, The Monterey Hotel is just steps from the Soto Adobe where Steinbeck once lived; it is also near Monterey’s famed Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row, which figure prominently in Steinbeck’s work. Monterey’s many Spanish-Colonial era structures and walking tours are also in the hotel’s neighborhood.

The Monterey Hotel Steinbeck Package encourages guests to borrow a “Footsteps of Steinbeck” CD from its front desk. This is a self-guided driving tour of historic Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel. A self-guided walking tour map is also available and points the way to a wealth of historic sites located near the hotel.

Opened in 1998 at a cost of $10 million, The National Steinbeck Center is a 37,000-square- foot facility that features an interactive exhibit hall devoted to Steinbeck’s life and literature, a movie theater, lecture forums, a museum shop, rotating exhibition gallery, restaurant, library and a 30,000-piece archive including letters, photographs and first editions. The center is located in Old Town Salinas just two blocks from the Victorian house in which John Steinbeck was born and reared.

Born in 1902, Steinbeck wrote many books based on his early experience growing up in Monterey County. These include: Cup of Gold in 1929; Tortilla Flat in 1935; The Grapes of Wrath in 1939, for which he received a Pulitzer Prize; Cannery Row in 1945; East of Eden in 1952; and Sweet Thursday in 1954. Steinbeck was the first author from California to receive the Nobel Prize in 1962. He is California's most famous novelist and has been called Monterey County's favorite son.

The novel is by turns nostalgic, comical and sad.

ABOUT THE MONTEREY HOTEL

Originally designed by famed architect William Weeks and built at a cost of $100,000, The Monterey Hotel was considered modern for its day because it had both gas heating and electric lighting. Rivaled only by the nearby Old Del Monte Hotel, which is today the Naval Postgraduate School, The Monterey Hotel was known for its hand-carved redwood ceilings, an ornate Hammond gilt-edged cage elevator and elaborate wainscoting—all of which remain prominent features today.

The Monterey Hotel is part of Moonstone Hotel Properties, a collection of boutique hotel properties set amid extraordinary destinations. The company was established in 1983 by Dirk Winter. Today, Moonstone Hotel Properties encompasses seven distinctive hotels in Cambria, Carmel, Monterey and Oregon. Additionally, the Moonstone-owned Cambria Nursery and Florist and the Moonstone-managed Oregon Garden botanical attraction capture Mr. Winter’s passion for fine gardening, which is also evident in the colorful landscaping at each of the Moonstone Hotel Properties.
